Sharleen Spiteri was working as a hairdresser when she formed the band ‘Texas’. So, for the second time, I happen to write about a hairdresser turned singer (see ‘Hairdresser on Fire: The music of António Variações’)
Her obvious beauty always understated, I love how Spiteri brings both substance and androgynous style to her performances. In t-shirt, trousers and trainers, she manages to outshine the rest.
Of course, there are the classic songs – but she also made great videos, often starring unusual leading men opposite the singer. ‘In Demand’ with the English actor Alan Rickman is a particular favourite of mine.
Yet, here I choose her hit ‘Inner Smile’, where Spiteri transforms into her own leading man, a rather convincing Elvis. A great example of her energy and humour!
