Sometimes, a new band comes out of the starting blocks with such an exhilarating energy. Experience and polish often can’t compete with sheer youthful excitement. This is the first official live performance of the Scottish synth-pop trio ‘Chvrches’,: Iain Cook, Martin Doherty and Lauren Mayberry; their song ‘Lies’, filmed at Glasgow School of Art:
Of course, Mayberry is the star. And yet, I love how Cook and Doherty frame her voice with their inventive and punchy sound. Take their much more recent cover of the Arctic Monkeys ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ which they make completely their own – their nervous, hectic music somehow making her elegant, almost cold delivery more compelling.
